FARGO — Veterinarians are warning pet owners in the Fargo-Moorhead area about a parvovirus outbreak that has sickened multiple puppies.

Prairie Winds Veterinary Center has confirmed cases of the highly contagious virus in three litters of puppies, one juvenile dog, and a single household puppy.

The virus can be deadly if not treated quickly, particularly for puppies and unvaccinated dogs. It typically causes vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration.

“We know that this virus is always out there because it’s so environmentally hardy,” said Dr. Alicia Wisnewski of Prairie Winds Veterinary Center. “You know, our dogs travel with us.
