LONGVIEW, Texas — Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday is officially observed on June 19, marking the day Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War.

Several organizations in East Texas will be celebrating Juneteenth next week.
