CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WSIL) -- Southeast Missouri State University's Law Enforcement Academy is undergoing a renovation. The $1.5 million project is partly funded by the U.S. Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Program.

The renovation will add 3,000 square feet of new space designed for modern law enforcement training. Plans include simulation environments for use of force, driving, and firearms training.

"We need our police officers to be able to have access to tools that present them with more realistic scenarios," said Dr. Carlos Vargas, SEMO President.

Dr. Vargas emphasized the importance of this investment. "This is going to be a much more of a regional resource for the community, all of southeast Missouri and even beyond that," Vargas said.
