FARGO — The Cass County Jail is set to open a 192-bed addition this summer, an accomplishment that will give law enforcement some breathing room after years of space issues, Sheriff Jesse Jahner said.

Crews are on track to finish the $31 million expansion by the end of the month, Jahner said in a Wednesday, June 4, interview with The Forum and WDAY. He said he plans to train officers who will work in the pod for two weeks, meaning the jail could start housing inmates in the addition by mid-July.

“We’re very excited,” Jahner said. “Obviously, it’s a long time coming.”

The project will increase the jail's capacity by 55%, he said, bringing the facility to 540 beds. More space means officers who make arrests won't have to make tough decisions about who should be brought to the jail and
