CROWN POINT — Each night before Kamia Johnson's 5-year-old son goes to bed, he looks up, air kisses the sky and tells his baby sister goodnight.

The boy was with Johnson at 18-month-old Kylee Burnett's bedside Sept. 14, 2022, when she died of injuries inflicted by her father. At her funeral, he got upset when someone tried to touch her casket.

"My heart broke into pieces watching my son tell his sister goodbye," Johnson said. "Casey, you tried to take everything from me."

Casey Burnett, 25, was sentenced to 20 years in prison Thursday in the abuse death of his daughter Kylee Burnett after he pleaded guilty to aggravated battery, a level one felony, which carries a possible sentence of 20 to 40 years in prison.
