As the Oakland Unified School District inches closer to being free of state financial oversight, district leaders will still need to overhaul future spending to stay solvent.
During Wednesday night’s regular board meeting, OUSD chief business officer Lisa Grant-Dawson presented an update on the 2024-2025 school year budget. The district continues to spend more money than it’s bringing in in revenue, leading to a declining general fund.
While over the last several years, building up the unrestricted general fund was a priority — it was negative when Grant-Dawson was hired in the 2019-2020 school year — it is expected to end the year with $60 million less than it had at the start of the year, Grant-Dawson said.
