A Texas bill awaiting Gov. Greg Abbott's signature would create five new district courts in Harris County over the next two years.
Senate Bill 2878 , which passed the House and Senate during this year's legislative session, would add three additional Harris County civil district courts this year and two more in 2026. The Harris County district court system is requesting that Abbott sign the legislation since the last civil district court was added in 1983, according to the county.
According to data from the county’s Justice Information Management System, civil case filings have increased by 46% from 2014 to 2024.
