NEW ALBIN, Iowa —
The scene Monday night in Northeastern Iowa seemed almost Biblical. Only it was a swarm of mayflies that filled the air above Shooky Fink Field — home of the Kee High School baseball team — not locusts.
The swarm arrived late in the game in New Albin, Iowa. The game was between Clayton Ridge Community High School and Kee High School.
Clayton Ridge coach Casey Zarr said it was "horrendous" when the swarm arrived.
Mayflies, also known as fishflies or shadflies, spend 99% of their lives in water, but they rise when they become winged adults to take part in a mating swarm.
