LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) — Thursday was just the fourth day on the job for Colonel Bryan Waugh, the newly appointed head of the Nebraska State Patrol.

The 52-year-old West Virginia native has called Nebraska home for more than 30 years.

“I was in the Air Force and I got stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in 1993,” Waugh said in a sit-down interview with 10/11.

When asked why he stayed in the Midwest, Waugh smiled.

“I met a girl, fell in love with her — so here I am," Waugh said.

Waugh is now leading Nebraska’s top law enforcement agency after decades policing in cities like La Vista and Kearney where he spent most of the last decade as chief.

He joined NSP this week as an outsider, something he’s keenly aware of.
