CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A Cranston middle school was evacuated Thursday afternoon following an incident with a laptop, 12 News has learned.

Hugh B. Bain Middle School was evacuated as a precaution following reports of smoke coming from one of the classrooms.

Cranston Superintendent Jeannine Nota-Masse told 12 News the district is "investigating whether this was the result of an intentional act by a student with a Chromebook."

"If that is the case, the student will be held accountable," Nota-Masse said.

The Cranston Police Department is assisting the district with their investigation, according to Nota-Masse.
