Former first lady Michelle Obama said she “respected” her daughter’s choice to drop her famous last name.
Speaking on the podcast “Sibling Revelry With Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson,” Obama said she wasn’t sure at first about Malia Obama’s decision to go by Malia Ann when she entered her short film at the Sundance Film Festival last year.
“We were like, ‘They’re still going to know it’s you, Malia,’” Michelle Obama said on the podcast.
She continued: “But we respected the fact that she’s trying to make her way.”
Michelle Obama said that her daughters, Malia, 26, and Sasha, 23, didn’t want to be “little princesses” while they lived in the White House from 2009 to 2016, saying they wanted to try things and “push the envelope.”
