A fire aboard a cargo ship carrying more than 3,000 vehicles was still smoking on Thursday, two days after the massive blaze forced its 22 crew members to abandon ship off Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, according to U.S. Coast Guard and shipping officials.
No one onboard the 600-foot Morning Midas was injured after they boarded a lifeboat and were picked up by a Greek merchant vessel, the Cosco Hellas, about 300 miles southwest of Adak Island and 1,200 miles west of Anchorage.
The Liberia-flagged cargo vessel that caught fire was carrying 3,048 vehicles, 70 of them electric and 681 of them partial hybrid electric, the Coast Guard said.
The fire broke out at around 2 p.m. Tuesday as the vessel traversed the northern Pacific Ocean on its way from Yantai, China, to Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico. Smo
