CLARK COUNTY, Ind — Thousands of Hoosier homeowners have opened their newest property value assessment in the last two months and have been shocked by the numbers.

"And I don't mind paying my fair share of taxes. I'm a law-abiding citizen. I don't mind. But to be pummeled by the county is ridiculous," Checheeta Courtney said, who owns the home she lives in in Clarksville and also two rental properties.

Courtney's main home near Greentree Mall was valued at $187,000 last year and $188,600 this year.

"I was okay with that," she said.

Her two rental properties, however, went up 91% and 73%. One home in Jeffersonville went from $124,000 to $237,000. The taxes on it last year were around $2,000, and if that doubled, she'd be in a bind.
