DENALI PARK, Alaska — A Seattle man died this week after falling 3,000 feet while ski mountaineering on Alaska's Mount McKinley, park officials said.

Alex Chiu, 41, was recovered Wednesday morning after falling from the West Buttress climbing route onto Peters Glacier, according to the National Park Service. Rangers transported his body to Denali National Park and Preserve headquarters before transferring him to the Alaska state medical examiner.

Chiu was part of a three-person expedition. On Monday, the other two team members reported that Chiu, who was not roped in, fell from a steep, rocky face marked by exposed ice.
