Homeowners in Kissimmee will soon start paying more money to cover a fire assessment fee aimed at helping the city recruit, retain, and better support firefighters.

The Kissimmee Fire Department has struggled with high turnover, slower response times, and a heavier workload in recent years.

City commissioners approved the proposed fee this week, saying that it will improve staffing shortages and give the department a better work schedule.

“The citizens deserve to have experienced firemen show up at their door,” said Joshua Clark, president of Kissimmee Fire Local Union 4208. “They need someone with experience to be there. Would you want a one-to-two-year guy taking care of you or a 15-year vet taking care of you?”
