HAMMOND — A Crown Point man was sentenced Thursday to 54 months in federal prison followed by two years of probation after he pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm as a previously convicted felon.
29-year-old Daeshawn Jones pleaded guilty in February to the offense, which occurred in October 2023 after Jones had been convicted of attempted criminal sex assault in Kankakee County, Illinois, in June 2022.
U.S. District Court Judge Philip Simon handed down his latest sentence.
On Oct. 8, 2023, police in Merrillville pulled over a vehicle in which Jones was a passenger, according to court documents. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded a loaded handgun. Jones attempted to flee the scene but was quickly arrested.
Jones was also convicted for felony forgery in Indiana i
