GILBERT — A 27-year-old Virginia man was found dead after he had been diving in a mine pit on the Iron Range on Thursday afternoon.

According to a news release from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, dispatchers received a call at 4:18 p.m. about a missing individual who had been cliff jumping into a water-filled mine pit in the Gilbert area.

A man who dialed 9-1-1 reported seeing his friend jump into the water, resurface, then disappear around a corner out of sight.

After multiple agencies and resources responded and searched the area, the man was found dead in the water.

The victim's identity has been withheld pending notification of family.
