Between 2008 and 2022, major assaults on transit workers nearly tripled nationwide. These incidents, as defined by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), involve fatalities or injuries requiring medical transport. In 2024, the FTA mandated transit agencies nationwide to evaluate and address risks associated with assaults on transit workers. Agencies must now conduct safety assessments and implement strategies to improve worker safety.
Ronald Short, a former longtime bus driver and now acting recording secretary for transit union ATU Local 1001, considers transit workers essential. “If we don’t come to work, the city doesn’t move,” he told
