A Florida man is due back in 41A District Court in Shelby Township next week after he was charged with counterfeiting a state ID to cash a fake $5,000 check, police said Thursday.

Billy Pierre, 21, of Homestead, Fla., was arraigned May 30 by Magistrate James A. Verploeg on charges of uttering and publishing, and forging a state ID to commit a felony. He was given a $200,000 bond.

“Financial crimes might not make as many headlines but make no mistake — we take them just as serious,” Police Chief Robert Shelide said in a news release. “If you think you can walk into our community and steal from hardworking people, think again. We’re watching, we’re vigilant, and we’re holding you accountable.”
