GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Grand Rapids family is spreading the word about an incurable and genetic kidney disease that impacts 600,000 people in the United States, according to the PKD-Free Alliance .

Polycystic kidney disease, or PKD causes cysts to form on your kidney, which can lead to its deterioration. Nephrologist Dr. Heedoak Han with Columbia University told 13 ON YOUR SIDE that PKD is one of the leading causes of kidney failure in people under 50.

New Grand Rapids mom Caitlin Cronan has PKD. Her grandmother sadly died from complications related to the disease. A parent runs a 50% risk of passing it to their child. Cronan's mom has PKD, and so do two of her four siblings.
