ANSONIA, Conn. — Illegal street takeovers have plagued communities across Connecticut and now state lawmakers are taking action.
A newly-passed bill is expected to give local police departments more authority to stop these dangerous gatherings, which often result in property damage and threaten public safety.
Ansonia police are still investigating a chaotic street takeover that occurred in late April. More than 100 cars and spectators took over the intersection of Wakelee Avenue and Franklin Street, leaving behind tire marks and a damaged police cruiser.
On Wednesday, a 17-year-old was arrested in connection with the incident. Police said more arrests could be coming.
