AUSTIN, Texas — A law that was on the books for 20 years has now come to an abrupt halt, after the U.S. Department of Justice sued Texas to block a law that allowed reduced in-state tuition for undocumented students .
Javier Perez-Salazar is a Mexican-American student who goes to UT Austin and hails from a border town. He says he has 10 friends who are now impacted by the change.
"What can I do? Like what do we do?" Perez-Salazar said. "I don't know what to do. My friends are like completely helpless. They can't fight this at all."
In a statement, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton called the change a win, saying that "ending this discriminatory and un-American provision is a major victory for Texas."
