SEQUIM, Wash. — The body of a man recovered in Dungeness Bay on Sunday is believed to be that of Ty Coone , a 21-year-old kayaker and fisherman from Sequim who vanished last month, authorities said.

Clallam County sheriff’s deputies said they are “highly confident” the remains are Coone’s, citing identifying tattoos. The coroner’s office is working to confirm the identity.

Coone disappeared on May 14 after calling 911 from his kayak, saying he was in distress and may be drowning. Responders found his kayak, life vest and paddle, but no sign of him in the water.

His mother, Michele Duncan, said the discovery has brought a bittersweet sense of closure after more than three weeks of searching.
