CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - A nonprofit in Cedar Rapids aims to help young people avoid decisions that could lead to arrest while also providing employment opportunities to those recently released from prison.

The “If I Don’t Do It Institute” is currently under construction along 1st Avenue SE in Cedar Rapids. Dell Pippins’ idea is to transform this into a place where young people can learn and spend time with mentors.

“There are residual harm or latent effects from time served with people’s children, nephews, and grandchildren,” said Pippins. “Even if they aren’t in the system.”

He also wants to reach out to those who are leaving jail or prison.

“This is about positively affecting people’s lives,” he said. “To effect change in our community.”
