For the first time in 19 games, the Vanden High School softball team ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.
After surrendering eight runs in the second inning, the Vikings dug themselves a hole they couldn’t climb out of, falling 17-10 on Thursday to Liberty in the Northern California Division II regional semifinals.
“That team bangs. They’re well coached, and played some good defense,” Vanden head coach Anthony Trujillo said. “We played a decent game, but we didn’t play our best game today.”
The loss marks the end of a historic season that featured the program’s first section title in over two decades and deepest run in the regional tournament. Trujillo said he’s beyond proud of what the Vikings accomplished this year.
