Drivers in Spartanburg County are getting a taste of something new with a diverging diamond traffic layout.

A diverging diamond interchange is a rare interchange where traffic crosses to the other side of the roadway between the freeway ramps, and was recently opened in Duncan at the SC-290 bridge over Interstate 85.

"It felt like I was in England driving on the opposite side of the road to get to the correct side. But, I mean, it's good, I like it, it's fun," said Naomi Navarret, "A little confusing, but it is a lot better. Traffic flows more easily. You have more lanes to choose from. So it's good."

According to the South Carolina Department of Transportation, a DDI is statistically proven to improve safety and mobility of traffic often at a much lower cost.
