June 5 has been declared Tre'jan Sales Day in Syracuse, honoring the memory of Tre'jan Sales, who was 20 years old when he was shot and killed in 2020.
The declaration by Mayor Ben Walsh aims to recognize Sales and the efforts of his mother, who has turned her grief into a mission to keep children safe.
Melesa Murry, Sales' mother, now serves as a First Student Safety Supervisor. She emphasized the importance of allowing children to enjoy their childhood and the need for community programs to support them.
"When I stop into a school I speak to children and reference to behavior and staying a child for as long as possible," said Murry. "I feel like our city needs to bring more things back for our children to do and be participating in different activities."
