ST. LOUIS — The death of Brayan Garzon-Rayo occurred at the intersection of two American tragedies.

One tragedy involves America's broken immigration system and President Donald Trump's attempts to deport at least some immigrants without due process. The other tragedy is the condition of America's jails and, specifically, their well-documented failures to provide quality health care.

When the two roads meet, people die.

Garzon-Rayo died in April after allegedly hanging himself with a bedsheet in the Phelps County Jail. He was in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which uses some rural Missouri jails to hold detainees.
