Carlow University will offer scholarships to Pittsburgh-area students interested in careers in education, and who are also expecting parents or raising families.

The scholarships, aided by a $487,846 grant from the Heinz Endowments, will expand opportunities for credentialing and apprenticeships for students entering early childhood education (ECE).

Through the grant, Carlow can improve pathways for students nearly 40 years old and aren’t taking a traditional route to secondary education.

Offering a college education to that demographic is just as exciting as offering it to those coming out of high school, said Keely Baronak, the chair of the university’s department of education and liberal studies.
