Goldfish are being introduced into Waterloo Region waterways at an alarming rate.
The stormwater management team at the City of Waterloo said that nearly all of the 59 city-operated stormwater ponds contain goldfish.
“Generally speaking, we find goldfish in most of our ponds when we go to do cleanouts,” said Jessica Kellerman, manager of stormwater operations in Waterloo.
“They multiply like crazy and if it gets too bad, then you’re introducing water quality issues and that can also create financial constraints for the municipality, because we’re not budgeting for fish removal.”
As more goldfish end up in stormwater ponds, the greater the chance is for them to spread to major waterways or damage critical infrastructure, including the stormwater ponds themselves.
