COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 3-year-old child and a 27-year-old adult died after they were pulled from a vehicle that went into a retention pond in West Jefferson Thursday evening, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Lt. Merrill Thompson said troopers were called on a report of a vehicle in a pond near a warehouse on Park West Drive , just off U.S. Route 40, around 6:25 p.m.

Witnesses told investigators they saw a vehicle, which OSHP said was a 2016 Jeep Cherokee, traveling westbound in the left lane before slowly driving to the right lane, off the road and into the pond. Investigators added that the vehicle struck a ditch before coming to a stop in the pond.

Three adults and two children were inside the Cherokee at the time of the crash, according to OSHP.
