JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Turner Ward played in 636 regular-season games during his Major League Baseball career, won two World Series rings and once homered in the playoffs.

Yet, his most memorable moment competing at the game’s highest level occurred on May 3, 1998, when he was playing right field for the Pittsburgh Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium.

Sprinting to catch a scorching line drive off the bat of Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Mike Piazza, Ward made a leaping catch and in doing so crashed through the wall.

He literally knocked the dark blue padded panel of the fiberglass structure ajar and disappeared from view for a split second. That highlight has made the rounds ever since and a YouTube video of the play had a little more than 286,000 views at last check.
