A former Austin Police Department sergeant resigned from the force after being charged with assault and official oppression.

Brian Yarger left his position as sergeant "in lieu of termination and participation in a disciplinary hearing," according to the Austin Police Department. According to online records, the charges were filed June 4, nearly 10 months after the alleged offenses occurred on July 24, 2024.

Records show Yarger faces misdemeanor charges of assault causing bodily injury and official oppression, both related to the same date in July 2024.

The Austin Police Department confirmed Yarger's resignation but did not provide additional details about the circumstances surrounding the charges.
