Pittsburgh police shot and killed a man who allegedly stabbed an officer serving a protection from abuse order Friday morning in Brighton Heights, authorities said.

The incident initially began shortly before 4 a.m. when officers responded to Carpenter Lane for what authorities called a domestic disturbance. Officers took one person from the home to city court to file for an emergency protection order, according to Allegheny County Police, the agency investigating the shooting.

Police returned to the home just before 6 a.m. to serve the PFA. As officers entered the home, authorities said, a man approached and stabbed one of the officers. A second officer shot the man multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
