ST. LOUIS — As is usually the case, Quentin Nauman had the killer kick at the end.

The distance standout from Western Dubuque closed with a 54.7-second final lap and won the boys’ championship mile race of the HOKA Festival of Miles on Thursday at St. Louis University High School.

Nauman’s time: 3 minutes, 58.65 seconds — an all-time Iowa best. Josiah Tostenson of Crater (Ore.) was second in 3:59.00.

A senior-to-be at Western Dubuque and a commit to the University of Oregon, Nauman had come off a historic weekend at the Iowa state championship meet two weeks prior.

There, he won Class 3A titles in the 800 (1:49.41), the 1,600 (3:59.60) — both on the same day, becoming the first high school
