The second trial of a man who killed the owner of a Clinton Township company and wounded an employee 7-½ years ago began Thursday with his defense attorney asking a jury to consider insanity as a defense to some or all of the charges.

Opening statements were held in Macomb County Circuit Court in the first-degree murder and attempted-murder retrial of Jerry Motley Jr., 32, after they were halted Wednesday due to the defendant’s multiple disruptions of proceedings in the courtroom. On Thursday, Motley was situated in a remote location to watch the proceedings on video, officials said.
