BUFFALO, N.Y. — Incidents of thieves stealing used cooking oil produced by restaurants are on the rise according to local police and industry experts.

Just before sunrise last Friday along Transit Road Amherst police arrested two men from Yonkers, who were driving a truck, with 1,400 gallons of used cooking oil, which police believe was stolen from containers behind several restaurants in the area.

"It's approximately $5,00 to $6,000 worth of grease, so it's significant," said Sumit Majumdar, founder and president of Buffalo Biodiesel .

It also represents an increasingly common occurrence in the Western New York area, which during an interview four years ago Majumdar warned was due to worsen.
