Washington State University will be operating on a reduced budget next academic year in order to navigate recent turbulence.
The WSU Board of Regents made tough decisions surrounding the institution’s finances during their virtual meeting Thursday.
The board approved a little over 4% in cuts (more than $17 million) to the university’s core operating budget. WSU Chief Financial Officer Leslie Brunelli said the budget amounts to $661 million for fiscal year 2026.
The reductions are the result of challenges WSU faces from declining state funding and enrollment, as well as inflated costs to utilities and services the university purchases, Brunelli said.
“These resources are seriously under threat this year,” Brunelli said.
