Five young men who warded off a knife attack outside a nightclub have been found guilty of grievous bodily harm after a judge ruled their defence turned 'excessive' and 'unlawful'.

But there were tears of relief in court as the group avoided jail time for the incident, which the judge described as involving a 'life-threatening act' involving a knife.

The group had been leaving Delaney's nightclub in Wantage on September 18 in 2022 at around 3am when they were set upon by Ahmed Chaouqi-Chemourek and Brzouami Maaloum - who was carrying a knife.

In the ensuing violence, Chaouqi-Chemourek suffered severe facial injuries and needed hospital treatment.
