Nineteen aspiring grandmasters appeared in the Wasatch County Library’s Bowcutt Room at 10 a.m on a recent Saturday morning for the School’s Out for the Summer student championships.

Eight-year-old Matias Chavez was competing in the grades 2-3 section with his siblings and parents.

“He began in Heber Valley Elementary, and now that we’ve moved to Midway, he kept going and we recently did a state tournament. He got seventh place,” said his father, Arsenio.

Fostering Matias’s interests has led to new experiences for his arents, too.

“Even I had to learn how to play because at one point his older brother didn’t want to play with him any more, so I had to do it,” Arsenio said. “After work sometimes, I didn’t want to do it, but Matias will go, ‘You know I need to keep practicing. You need t
