MILLERVILLE — The Millerville American Legion will hold a flag retirement ceremony on Saturday, June 14.
What is Flag Day? Each year, on June 14 the nation pauses to observe Flag Day, commemorating the day in 1777 when the Continental Congress officially adopted the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States.
President Woodrow Wilson made the observance official on May 30, 1916, by a presidential proclamation.
Legion members say that the flag is more than just a piece of fabric. It stands for something far greater — it represents the ideals upon which this great nation was built: liberty, unity, sacrifice and hope.
Flag Day is observed in many ways across communities. Various veteran organizations will host or participate in celebrations and include a Flag Retirement Ceremony.
