TAMPA — The Lightning have hired Dan Hinote to fill the vacancy on Jon Cooper’s staff that opened when former assistant Jeff Blashill left last month to become head coach of the Blackhawks .

Hinote, 48, won a Stanley Cup as part of a nine-year NHL playing career despite being a low-round draft pick. He brings a breadth of coaching experience ranging from the juniors to the AHL and NHL ranks.

He has eight years of experience as an NHL assistant, spending four seasons with both Columbus (2010-11 to 2013-14) and Nashville (2020-21 to 2023-24). This past season, he was associate head coach of the Avalanche’s AHL affiliate, the Colorado Eagles.

Hinote also was a pro scout for the Blue Jackets and spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the U.S. National Team Development Program.
