President Trump’s “big beautiful bill” could cut $900 million in SNAP funding for Michigan.
Kate Bauer with the University of Michigan school of public health tells us 15% of Michiganders use SNAP and nearly all of those families have children. She says if they lose SNAP, they’ll have to turn to food banks, which could put a burden on the system.
“ We are going to be in dire straits and many, many more families are going to have to rely on food pantries, food banks, much more often,” Bauer said. “We don’t have the capacity to feed all of these families.”
Bauer says more children will go hungry if the SNAP benefits go through. She says families on SNAP work hard every day, and use the program to fill gaps.
