NEW ORLEANS — After nearly three weeks, Louisiana Department of Transportation crews have successfully removed the garbage truck that was blocking a key entrance to Interstate 10.

The truck became stuck on May 19 when it failed to clear an overhead steel beam while entering I-10, due to being “overstacked” with a dumpster. The truck, now covered in graffiti, damaged the guardrail and a steel support beam holding up another ramp overhead.

The incident forced the closure of the Carrollton Avenue and Airline Drive entrance ramps.

DOTD reopened the westbound I-10 ramp around 4 p.m.

Work crews installed temporary support beams to shore up the damaged ramp support beam.

Officials initially scheduled the vehicle’s removal for a later date, then moved the timeline to Friday.
