“The Protocol,” a new six-part audio series from The New York Times, tells the story of where youth gender medicine began, whom it was meant to help and how recent legal and political fights over this care could end it altogether in the United States.
Science reporter Azeen Ghorayshi and audio producer Austin Mitchell have been reporting this story together for the past two years. They traveled to the Netherlands, where the care originated, followed it back to the U.S. and documented how this small medical story became embroiled in a far larger political story t
