Steve Rothwell has often driven the Zamboni, and in unusual circumstances, like the time the Ancaster man took the wheel at an arena in England, because none of the locals knew how to operate the iconic ice refresher.

But this was a new one.

Last week, the facility operator at Harry Howell Arena received a call from the city’s manager for arenas, asking if Rothwell would do a special flood of the ice for a photo shoot.

“I figured it was a promotional thing,” said Rothwell. “There’s not a lot of ice left in town at this time of year … He mentioned Darnell Nurse being from Hamilton.”

Nurse plays for the Edmonton Oilers, who are in the Stanley Cup final against the Florida Panthers. Nurse grew up playing minor hockey at Lawfield Arena on the Mountain, but the ice is out for summer.
