CINCINNATI, Iowa (KCRG) - A fallen soldier who was killed on D-Day is being laid to rest Friday - exactly 81 years after his death.

An interment is being held for U.S. Army Pvt. James Lee Harrington of Cincinnati, Iowa.

Pvt. Harrington was one of approximately 200 soldiers on a landing craft heading toward Omaha Beach.

The vessel hit a mine, coming under heavy enemy fire.

The landing craft caught on fire before sinking. All aboard the vessel were killed.

In 1946, recovery teams found the vessel and recovered the remains of four people.

Remains were unable to be identified at the time, and were buried as “Unknown” at Normandy American Cemetery.

Pvt. Harrington was officially listed as Missing in Action before his remains were exhumed in 2021 and positively identified in 2023.
