WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - Williston residents have two important elections coming up on Tuesday. One vote will be on extending the park district’s sales tax.
Since 2012, Williston Parks and Recreation has been using a one percent sales tax rather than property tax to fund operations.
Executive Director Joe Barsh said half of that revenue stream will go away soon with the Area Recreation Center set to be paid off in a few years.
He said the vote is needed to maintain the sales tax indefinitely instead of going back to property taxes.
“More people come through Williston, shop, and recreate, than the people who just live in Williston do. Capturing the transient dollars is more profitable than the mill levy of assessing those who live here,” said Barsh.
