Last week, I bemoaned the pointless violence involving children and torture in the Philippou’s “Bring Her Back.” That horror entry focused way too much on showing us depravity without narrative purpose, making the film something analogous to the old “Faces of Death” shockumentaries of the late 1970s and 1980s.

That series of movies proved to be a potent renter in the video stores where I worked in the 1980s. But I wouldn’t call their horrific collection of hosted “home” movies good or possessing any intelligible narrative other than to achieve shock and
