A General Motor Co. insider who started as a skilled tradesman is the automaker's new global manufacturing leader, GM said Friday.

GM named Mike Trevorrow executive vice president of global manufacturing, a challenging job amid unpredictable tariffs and slower-than-expected interest in electric vehicles.

The third-generation GM worker started as a die-making apprentice and most recently served as vice president of global manufacturing engineering.

He played an instrumental role in the creation of the Technical Learning University in Warren. GM retrofitted a midcentury office space that was split into cubicles and dripping in avocado green into a modern training space where workers learn how to program and troubleshoot their robot coworkers.
